Vasudev’s Early Life
Vasudev was born in Mysore, India and his father was a doctor. Even as a child, he exhibited unique tendencies. At the age of 13, Vasudev began yogic practices such as asanas and pranayama under the tutelage of Raghavendra Rao. He went on to get a degree from Mysore University.
At age 25, Vasudev experienced intense spiritual sensations that veered him away from materialism towards a life of renunciation. One afternoon, as Vasudev sat at a quiet place in the Chamundi hills, he felt an expansion that made him believe he was not just the body, but spread everywhere: in the earth, trees and rocks. He came to his senses only in the evening. Vasudev experienced the same sensation several times after that day. After such episodes, Vasudev did not eat or drink for the next few days.
Vasudev’s profound mystical experiences changed his life. He then decided to spend his life sharing those experiences. In 1992, Vasudev and his followers started the Isha Foundation ashram at the base of the Velliangiri mountains near Coimbatore, in Tamil Nadu state. The fascinating features of this ashram are a multi-religious temple and a huge meditation shrine called dhyanalingam. The foundation also runs an orphanage, a medical facility and many yoga centers in India.
Isha Yoga is a subtle, yet powerful science. It aims at good health as this is fundamental to spiritual growth. Isha yoga aims at developing peace and calmness, along with good physical health. It helps to change the inner chemistry of an individual to release emotional, mental and physical blocks.
Vasudev has devised a unique form of yoga that can help anyone realize life’s fullness. This yoga does not need previous knowledge of yoga or special physical agility. This program is known as Sahaj Sthithi Yoga which means “natural self”. It can be easily adopted and followed daily as it lays stress on personal experience. This program can improve one’s efficiency and creative potential by increasing the ability to concentrate in a relaxed manner.
