Profile of Dada Vaswani

Dada Vaswani is a prolific orator and writer. He heads the Sadhu Vaswani mission in Pune. This article reveals the inspiring

profile of Dada Vaswani.

Early Days

Dada Vaswani was born in 1918 to Sindhi parents. As a student, Vaswani exhibited great brilliance and obtained many double promotions. As a result, he passed his BS examination at the tender age of 17. This was followed by a fellowship which a leading college gave to him. Thus, Vaswani was poised for a brilliant career in academics or civil services.

Turns to Spirituality

But, there was a larger purpose waiting for Vaswani. He decided to follow the spiritual footsteps of his guru and paternal uncle Sadhu TL Vaswani. This decision was not taken with great fanfare, but unobtrusively, yet decisively.

Love For Education

Dada Vaswani emphasizes the importance of education. He has the greatest reverence for teachers, as he believes they can shape the future by imparting quality education. The Sadhu Vaswani Mission founded St Mira’s College for Girls in 1962 in Pune. Vaswani says women have an important role to play in India’s destiny. This college emphasizes that eduction is for life, not just to earn a living. It inculcates discipline, character building and respect for all life, and cultivates moral, social, cultural and spiritual values.

The Mira movement has expanded to include six institutions in Pune, educating more than 5,000 students. Education is covered from pre-primary school to post-graduate level. Besides, today the mission also has schools in Mumbai, Rajkot, Ahmedabad, Baroda and Delhi.

Emphasis on Vegetarianism

Dada Vaswani lays emphasis on vegetarianism. He says it is simply more practical as producing meat is more expensive and consumes a lot of water. Thus, vegetarianism makes sense spiritually, ecologically and health-wise. By becoming vegetarian, we lower the chances of heart disease and cholesterol. By not killing animals for food, we become elevated spiritually. The mission observes a “Meatless Day” on November 25.

Talk less, Work more

Dada Vaswani firmly believes that religion is not merely about mouthing empty homilies. He emphasizes on selfless work. The mission gives food and fruits to needy people, animals and birds. Its daily activities include serving aged, handicapped, blind and diseased people. In Mumbai, the mission collaborates with Hinduja hospital to perform open heart surgeries. It holds regular blood donation camps and assists in cataract operations as well.

Beyond Borders

Dada Vaswani’s love is not restricted by man-made borders. Since 2005, the Sadhu Vaswani Mission has sponsored the treatment of poor Pakistani children suffering from heart ailments at Nanavati hospital. As a goodwill gesture, the hospital also agreed to reduce its fees. Thus, with his sublime words and deeds, Dada Vaswani has striven to keep alive India’s hoary spiritual tradition.
