Early Life

Baba Ramdev was born Ramkishan Yadav in Haryana. He studied in a regular school till class eight. Then, he joined a gurukul in the village of Khanpur. Here, he learnt Sanskrit and yoga techniques.

His Renunciation

After passing out from the gurukul, Ramkishan Yadav became a sanyas and took the name of Baba Ramdev. He then joined Kalva gurukul in Jind district. Here, he taught yoga to the villagers of Haryana. After some time, he went to the Himalayas and lived there for many years. Then, he traveled to Haridwar, which remains his base till date.

Becoming an Ascetic

Baba Ramdev joined an ascetic order after being initiated by Swami Shankerdevji Maharaj. He then started studying the vedas and other scriptures. He also practiced meditation and self-discipline.

Divya Yoga Mandir Trust

In 1995, Baba Ramdev founded the Divya Yoga Mandir Trust in Haridwar. Here, pranayama and yoga are taught to all comers. His associates are Acharya Balkrishna and Acharya Karamveer.

Patanjali Yog Peeth

In 2006, Baba Ramdev founded the Patanjali Yogpeeth (PYP) Trust. This organization aims to build a large teaching and research center on Yoga and Ayurveda. PYP gives free medical treatment to the poor. For the general populace, treatments costs are generally lower than at other hospitals. PYP works with various medical institutions to research the effectiveness of pranayama and yoga in treating ailments like obesity, hypertension, diabetes, etc.

Base in Scotland

In 2009, PYP acquired a small island off Scotland to build a health retreat. This island will be Baba Ramdev’s base abroad as yoga is becoming popular in the West.

Raising National Issues

Baba Ramdev is also famous for raising awareness about national issues such as corruption, use of pesticides in farms, the harm caused by soft drinks and fast food and widespread poverty. He has founded the Bharat Swabhiman party to contest elections.
