Most of us spend our days living a mechanical life. We try to appease every whim and fancy of our body and mind. To learn self-control, we must develop awareness. This can be done by introspection and self-analysis. For self-analysis to be effective, we must be truthful to ourselves. Our ego should not affect our self-analysis.

Nobody is Perfect

Introspection and self-analysis will make us realize that we are not perfect. By analyzing our mind, we become aware of our innermost thoughts and motives. Once we learn to recognize the shenanigans of our monkey mind, we will become wiser. So, learn to watch your mind detachedly. Impartially witness the mind’s likes and dislikes, and cravings and rejections. When we learn to understand our mind, we can reject negative thoughts and think positive ones.

How to Have Self Control

To develop our mind and improve self control, we can practice meditation, creative activities and selfless social service. When we practice such positive activities, our mind will become broader and transcend narrow thinking. Meditation improves awareness and gives us clarity of thought. When our mind becomes calm and clear, then we will be able to hear the voice of our conscience.

Think On Your Own

We do not have to mechanically follow religious or any other dogma. By thinking creatively, we can put forth new paradigms and discoveries. A calm mind under control becomes intuitive and capable of understanding intricate spiritual truths. We should also learn from our experience. As the saying goes, “Experience is the best teacher”. By learning from our mistakes, we become wiser and stronger.

Keep an Open Mind

Diligently scrutinize your motives and actions. Then, your outlook will become flexible and you will be able to accept your mistakes. When this happens, you will not feel the need to justify yourself before others. You will also understand that others are also human and therefore liable to make mistakes. The famous poet Alexander Pope wrote, “To err is human, to forgive divine”. When we understand the deep meaning of this saying, our minds will automatically become broader and forgiving.
