A Tribute to the Late Sathya Sai Baba

Sathya Sai Baba passed away recently leaving behind a legacy of charity, love and controversy. His most important contribution to society was his benevolent social work, which benefited thousands of poor people. “Service to man is service to God” was his simple message. His practical spirituality converted even hardened atheists into ardent followers. Read on to know more about the inspiring life of the late Sathya Sai Baba.

Secular Spirituality

Sai Baba emphasized that his spirituality was totally secular. By following his principles, Christians could become better Christians, and Muslims better Muslims. He advocated the path of selfless service as superior to meditation, prayer or knowledge of scriptures. Service can effectively erase the ego and provide inner bliss, he said.

Social Work

Sathya Sai Baba’s trust has established many hospitals that provide treatment free of cost to the needy. He emphasized on quality education, healthcare and water supply to the poor. To this end, Sai Baba was instrumental in founding many colleges, schools, housing projects and drinking water supply schemes. His pet projects shun commercialism and focus on quality service to the poor.

His Healing Touch

Sai Baba’s medical service to the poor is worthy of mention. His trust organizes free blood donation camps, medical clinics, cataract operations and medical camps for the rural poor. Many volunteers offer to serve in leprosy homes, old age homes and orphanages. For the poor, even valve replacement and heart surgeries are not charged at the trust’s super-speciality hospitals.

Drinking Water Projects

Sathya Sai Baba masterminded drinking water supply projects in water-starved Chennai and Andhra Pradesh. The chief minister of Tamil Nadu M Karunanidhi, an avowed atheist, changed his mind after observing Sai Baba’s effective service. Karunanidhi equated Sai Baba to God for the latter’s selfless service to the poor.

Controversial Miracles

Sathya Sai Baba’s critics allege that his habit of producing objects out of thin air is nothing but sleight of hand. Sai Baba trivializes the issue saying these ‘miracles’ are not important. He says
atheists and critics should focus on his love and actions. Sai Baba says that we are all Gods, but very few realize and act accordingly.

Eternal Message

Sathya Sai Baba’s mortal coil may have perished, but his message remains immortal. He instilled hope and faith among his followers. His legacy of love, compassion and selfless service will continue to inspire and motivate his numerous followers.
